Esch-sur-Alzette (Luxembourg). The European Association for Renewable Energies and its Luxembourgian section honoured eight nominees from six different countries with the European Solar Prize 2019 at the Campus Belval in Luxembourg’s picturesque Esch-sur-Alzette on 15/11/2019.
Industrial Solar won the prize in the category ‘industrial and commercial companies or farmers’. The jury honored that, with their operating installations of Fresnel solar steam generators, Industrial Solar proves that solar process steam is feasible, can contribute significantly to a carbon neutral process heat supply and is thus a paradigm shift towards a carbon neutral industrial heat supply.
Martin Haagen, who received the award on behalf of the Industrial Solar team, stated: “I am very proud that our company was awarded the European Solar Prize for our Fresnel collector. With our operating plants, we have proven the great potential of solar thermal energy for process heating and thus laid the foundation of a major step towards a carbon neutral industrial production. Our vision is 100% renewable energy in industry, and the European Solar Prize confirms that we are on the right track”.
Among others, the Fridays For Future movement was honoured with the European Solar Prize 2019, which has been awarded annually since 1994 to municipalities, municipal companies, associations and organisations, architects, journalists and private individuals in cooperation with the national sections of EUROSOLAR. The award recognises the dedication and inventiveness of regional players and provides new impetus for a regenerative and decentralised energy revolution in Europe.

Industrial Solar’s direct steam generation based on its LF-11 Fresnel collector technology has been awarded the “Solar Impulse Efficient Solution“ label.
The “Solar Impulse Efficient Solution” label seeks to bridge the gap between ecology and economy, bringing together protection of the environment and financial viability to show that these solutions are not expensive fixes to problems, but rather opportunities for clean economic growth.
This label is granted to solutions who meet high standards of both sustainability and profitability. “Imagine the impact that this will have on the world! 1000 clean and efficient solutions with a label proving their profitability. They have the potential to create jobs and boost clean economic growth, while also reducing CO2 emissions and preserving natural resources. This is much more than ecological, it is logical!” said Bertrand Piccard, Initiator and Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation. “Each time I speak of protecting the environment to heads of state or government officials, they tell me that it is too expensive. This label is a strong message to them: solutions exist, and represent the biggest market opportunity of our century. An opportunity which cannot be missed.” The latest challenge of the Solar Impulse Foundation has received widespread institutional support, including from the UNFCCC, the European Commission, The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). Further collaborations include the EU Covenant of Mayors, a collection of more than 7,500 mayors from across the European continent looking to implement EU climate and energy objectives and to transition their cities toward sustainability.
Christian Zahler, CEO of Industrial Solar Holding Europe AB, commented: “Thank you for awarding our solar steam generation system the “Solar Impulse Efficient Solution“ label and for telling the world that there are efficient, sustainable and affordable solutions out there reducing our emissions and bringing us closer to a carbon neutral society and circular economy. We’re proud to be a part of the solution.”

Thanks to the support of the EU Gateway program, Industrial Solar exhibits its solutions at the 7th World Smart Energy Week in Osaka/Japan.
Japan's Leading Energy Show started on September 25, 2019 on the INTEX fairgrounds in Osaka/Japan. Industrial Solar was selected by the EU Gateway program as one of 32 companies from Europe to exhibit its solutions and services at EU Pavilion in Hall 4.
Christian Zahler, Managing Director of Industrial Solar GmbH, stated: "I'm very proud that our company has been selected for the EU Gateway Mission on Green Energy Technologies to Japan. With the excellent support of the EU Gateway program, we can present our solutions for industrial customers located in the sunbelt of our planet. There are plenty of large Japanese corporates with facilities in countries which are suitable for our solar solutions. With our customer Japan Tobacco International (JTI), who purchased one of our solar steam generation system for its production facility in Amman/Jordan in 2017, we have an excellent reference to convince other potential partners and customers here in Japan. Furthermore, there are also many companies exhibiting at this fair that offer products and technologies which are of interest to us as internationally active turn-key providers." The World Smart Energy Week is held twice a year in Tokyo (February) and Osaka (September) and aims to provide a platform for professionals from across the world to negotiate and network for the future of smart and renewable energy business and to promote and foster innovation. More than 60,000 visitors attended the World Smart Energy Week in Tokyo in February this year, and the increasing visitor numbers display the growing interest in and importance of the World Smart Energy Week’s program and sustainable energy solutions.

The parties jointly foster the initiation of heat purchase agreements for solar process heat in Jordan.
On September 16, 2019, Industrial Solar GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of Industrial Solar Holding EuropeAB, signed a partnership agreement with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ). The objective of the three-year project is to foster heat purchase agreements for solar process heat in Jordan. The total project volume is going to exceed 400 k€, of which Industrial Solar will receive direct public support of 173.5 k€. In sunny countries like Jordan, solar process heat can significantly cut the fuel demand, CO2 emissions and operating costs, and thus, contribute to a sustainable development. Industrial Solar has successfully proven its technical excellence by implementing two solar process heating systems in Jordan. Through the new approach of heat purchase agreements technical solutions will be combined with an innovative business model where the industrial enduser does not need to cover the capital investment of the plant. In this way, a major constraint for interested end-users will be overcome and a significant increase in the turn-over is expected. To foster this business model in Jordan, Industrial Solar GmbHand GIZwill develop suitable contracts, implement the first solar process heating project under a heat purchase agreement in Jordan and undertake further capacity building measures for both solar process heating and heat purchase agreements. Within this development partnership the parties will cooperate with further private and public partners from both Jordan and Germany.

Industrial Solar is proud to be mentioned as best practice by Green Cooling Initiative. We installed a Fresnel Collector field with a total capacity of 700 kW(th) for our client JTI (Japan Tobacco International). Besides process heating, the solar steam also powers a double effect absorption chiller which is directly connected to the central cold supply of the facility.
On July 6th, Industrial Solar was present at a training program provided by the Export-Akademie Baden Württemberg (EABW) for an Iranian business delegation, represented by Mr. Irapua Santos Ribeiro, business developer for the Latin America market. He covered the main types of renewables and pointed out the great solar potential in Iran, that has more than 300 days of sun in some regions. The company also presented some cases focusing on the latest implemented projects in Jordan for direct steam generation using its proprietary Fresnel technology.
Industrial Solar commissioned another Fresnel Collector field for steam generation JTI (Japan Tobacco International) in Jordan. The energy is used for process heating and to drive an absorption chiller.
